New Year's Eve

Well, since it's New Year's Eve, and since I'm going on my third week of bedrest, and since I have nothing better to do, I thought I'd update our blog. Last year we went down to Mill Ave. at ASU to see Third Eye Blind play and ring in the New Year with some friends; that was a lot of fun. This year we got take out from a local favorite restuarant and are going to do our best to stay up to see the ball drop at midnight. Hard to believe this time next year we'll have an almost one year old little boy to celebarte with us!

I've been in the hospital four times now since my blood pressure has decided not to cooperate with my pregnancy, and expect to go for a fifth trip this Wednesday after my doctor's appointment, since that's been the drill for my last four doctor appointments. In fact, last week (day after Christmas) I was admitted for an overnight stay.

As you can see, Adam got quite creative and moved the little couch bed over next to my hospital bed so he could sleep next to me. Bless his heart, the bed was so small and his legs were hanging off the end by a couple of feet, but he didn't complain and just made sure I was comfortable the whole time.

The doctor told me last week that it is possible they could induce my labor in a week and a half to two weeks (meaning in a few days from now)! I knew this baby was coming soon enough, but that soon?!?! I'll know more after my appointment and ultrasound this week, but hopefully all is well and I'll continue to stay on the bedrest to give Rocklin a little more time to grow and develop as much as possible.

I hope everyone out there has a fun time this New Year's Eve! We love all of you and thanks to everyone who has been keeping our little family in your thoughts and prayers. I'll try and post more as time moves along...soon enough we'll have baby pictures to share! (By the way, Santa brought us a nice camera for Christmas this year, so we'll have a lot more pictures to come).

Merry Christmas!!

I promise my next post will have pictures...but for now I wanted to write and wish everyone a big MERRY CHRISTMAS! This is the first time in my "adult" life that I did not send out Christmas cards. I feel kind of guilty, I really wanted to, but I just didn't get to it this year. I'll be sending out baby announcement cards when Rocklin makes his debut, so bare with me until then. Thanks to all my wonderful friends and family who sent us Christmas cards this year - everyone looks so good! It's always fun to read what everyone has been up to over the past year, and especially seeing pictures of everyone!

This year my family is spending Christmas with Adam and I here in Arizona. We are so excited!! Two of my brothers (Daniel and Kevin) drove down from Utah and arrived today, and my parents and twin brothers Aaron and Adam arrive tomorrow - driving in from Georgia! Bless their hearts, that's a heck of a drive from Georgia to Arizona! I'm blessed to have such a wonderful family! They'll be here all week, so I'm sure we'll be taking lots of pictures that I'll post soon enough.

On a separate note, I've been put on bed rest with my pregnancy. This past week I ended up in the hospital on three different occasions, all with super high blood pressure. My doctor says she's sure it's preeclampsia. It seems that the only thing that keeps my blood pressure down is the bed rest, especially laying on my side. This didn't seem too bad at first, but laying on your side all day and all night can get real old, real fast! My doctor says I'll defiantly be delivering early, although at this point I'm not too sure how early. My baby shower is coming up on January 12th, so I hope I can last until at least then! I'm 33 weeks pregnant now, and the baby's lungs are still developing, so hopefully they won't have to induce me prior to him being really strong and healthy. The doctor mentioned possibly having to give me steroids for the baby to help his lungs develop quickly, but the idea of that makes me so nervous. I'm sure what ever ends up happening the good Lord will be watching over both me and the baby. I just need to make sure I do my part and hang in there with the bed rest so I can keep the baby as close to full-term as possible!

Christmas Lights

Tonight Adam and I had the opportunity to attend the Christmas lights display at the Mesa, AZ Temple with some of Adam's friends from work. We had a great time with them looking at the lights and sharing more about the gospel. We watched the Luke 2 video again and also got to see nativity scenes from all over the world. It was really cool! I'd recommend it to anyone who has the chance to check it out.

9 weeks and counting...

Disclaimer: This is a long post. I guess I felt like I had a lot to say...and there aren't any fun pictures involved, sorry.

I'm officially 31 weeks pregnant now, only 9 more to go. Unless little Rocklin decides to make his appearance a little earlier than expected, which I guess is OK as long as he's healthy (although I'm not sure I'll ever be 100% "ready" for this whole birthing and labor experience, so maybe it's best he wait out the full 40 weeks). He's not allowed to come any later than planned, so I'm not even going to write that in as an option for him.

I don't want to bore everyone with all the miserable experiences that come along with being pregnant, however there are some I feel the need to share. Here they are:

I've started snoring, much to Adam's dismay. It's funny because I was SO worried that when we got married Adam was going to be a big snorer. I've had a bag of earplugs in my nightstand for the past year and a half that I've only had to use a few times. Sad for him, but the tables have turned! He wears earplugs every night now just so that he can sleep. I'm hoping this is just a pregnancy related thing and that I won't be known as the girl that snores from now on.

I cried the other day because I couldn't bend over. I was trying to shred some papers in our shredder, and I was sitting in the big office chair and I dropped some of the papers and in my attempt to bend over and pick them up, I realized I couldn't reach them because my belly was in the way and I started crying. To those of you non-pregnant people out there, I'm sure crying seems like a bit of an overreaction to such a stupid situation, however to those of you who have been or are pregnant, I'm sure you can feel my pain on this one. Stupid hormones.

I have cankles. That's right, cankles. I usually do OK until about 4 - 5 PM at which point my legs go from looking like normal every day legs to tree trunks. It's mostly my ankles and then extends to my feet. I thought for sure I'd be immune from this horrible pregnancy side-effect since all my life I've had pretty nice ankles, if I do say so myself. Not anymore. And it's not like they just swell up, they swell up to the point of feeling tight - it's hard to explain, but it's not pleasant (feeling or looking). I'm sure they look way worse to me than anyone else, and a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I'm still working full-time at my job and not at home resting as much as I probably should be.

I've just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Yuck. As if trying to watch what I eat wasn't hard enough, now I REALLY have to be careful and also check my blood sugar like four times a day to make sure all is well. Hello bran muffins, apples and sugar-free jello and good-bye pretty much anything else I'd like to eat. To be honest, I'm not even sure what I can eat...I'm waiting to hear from the hospital as my doctor has referred me to a "diabetes teaching" class at the hospital. At this class I'm supposed to learn what to eat, how often to eat, etc. etc. I've also started walking on a regular basis at night, and so far Adam's been nice enough to go with me. I figure a little fresh air and time out of the house and out on our feet couldn't be bad for either one of us.

Along with the gestational diabetes, my doctor says that I'm going to have to go in for ultrasounds twice a week, once I hit 33 weeks. This seems a bit much to me, and maybe it won't be extended until I deliver, but I guess for now it will be good to keep a close eye on our little guy to make sure that he's doing good. And as of my last appointment, he's doing really well - weighing in at 3 lbs. 12 oz., and looking really healthy. I am praying he stays that way and no complications come up because of the diabetes. Oh, and at my last appointment I had an ultrasound and we were able to see his little feet (which are about 2 inches long) and his spine (straight as can be) and his femur bone and a few other fun things, but he was being VERY stubborn about showing us his face! He kept both his arms and hands up around his face. I guess he was just not in the mood for pictures that day. It's hard to be upset with him though, I mean how can you be frustrated with someone who has 2 inch feet?

One last thing ... yesterday in our ward's primary, we watched the video Luke 2. I guess I never really thought in detail about the sacrifices of Mary and Joseph, but especially Mary, in riding a donkey to Bethlehem to deliver the baby Jesus. The primary leader put it into perspective in that it would be like a pregnant woman today having to ride a donkey 9 months pregnant from where we live in Chandler, AZ to say Flagstaff, AZ (about a couple hours away) and then having to give birth without drugs in a stable on top of hay surrounded by animals. The video brought a tear to my eye as I feel like I understand a little more about the sacrifices made by Mary. How thankful I am for this little primary lesson and for the eye-opening experience it was for me watching this Christmas video.

Sneak Peak...

I thought I'd share a sneak peak of Rocklin's nursery with everyone. Adam and his friend Nate worked really hard over the weekend getting the crib and baby furniture put together and cleaning out and organizing to make room for everything. Then last night Adam put the crib bedding on and called me into the nursery to see it all - SO cute! It's so fun to see Adam so excited about all of this baby stuff. He's going to make the best daddy!!

I'll be posting more pictures once we get the nursery all finished, but I wanted to share pictures of the crib and bedding for now.

Also, here's me as of last night...looking SUPER prego!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello everyone...just wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving this year. Does anyone have any exciting plans? Adam and I are headed to California to spend Thanksgiving with his side of the family. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone!

New Car!

Adam and I have been looking around lately for a new car. With Rocklin arriving in just under three short months, we wanted to get a bigger, safer car that would work well for an all-purpose car. I test drove a couple of different makes and models (mostly SUV's) and we were anxiously trying to get out of the lease on the truck Adam has been driving. Last night we went to a new dealership they just built not far from our house and we found a white Chevy Tahoe that we really liked! It's in great condition; very clean and with really low miles. Anyway, I don't know that either one of us were actually planning on walking away with a new car last night, but we did! We finalized the deal and are now the proud owners of this beauty: (and don't mind the guy crawling underneath the car...that's just Adam checking underneath the car for any unseen damage)

Welcome Home, Elder Young!

Yesterday the last of my brothers came home from his mission! Aaron was serving in the Peru Lima North mission. He spent the last half of his mission as Assistant to the President. We are so proud of him!! It was really good to be able to talk to him yesterday and welcome him home! He was at the airport when I called and I could tell that he was in shock just looking around and being back in the good old United States. One of the first things he wanted to do was go to Taco Bell! I guess two years of eating nothing but chicken and rice will get to a guy after a while.

Welcome Home Aaron!!!!!!

Belated Halloween Memories

Back when I lived in Atlanta and attended the singles ward there, Jennie and Chuck Kuck hosted a Halloween party and we won first prize in the costume contest! I thought of a clever idea for a costume for my roommates, my brother and me. Here are Michelle, Aaron, Jen and me dressed as a polygamist family...

Hawaii

I got back late last night from my trip to Hawaii. A great friend of mine from Texas, Angie, got married in Oahu on Monday. I was lucky enough to get to go to Hawaii for her wedding to Troy. I met up with some of my best friends there - Hillary, Heather and Jennifer. The wedding was beautiful - right on the beach. An old vegan surfer guy married them; his name was Captain Howie. He did a great job with the ceremony. All in all we had a very enjoyable time, minus the fact that my body swelled up so much I felt like the Marshmallow Man by the time I flew home. I never thought I'd be "that girl" that got cankles when she was pregnant. Boy was I wrong. I got SO swollen - I think it must have been from all the walking around, especially in the sand, and the humidity. Enough whining out of me though, I know you all want to see pictures, so here they are:
Here's the happy couple, Angie and Troy:

Here's Captain Howie blowing into the Conch Shell...he blew into 3 times, all representing different wishes to the couple:

Angie, the beautiful Bride:

Hillary & Jennifer:

I had to shout out to my cute husband since I was at a wedding and it brought back wedding memories of my own wedding:

The sunset was absolutely beautiful:

I wasn't kidding about my cankles. I took this picture after what felt like a Chariots of Fire jaunt across the beach to get to the actual wedding ceremony (and lucky for me the swelling has gone down a ton since I've returned home):

Here's one more breathtakingly (is that a word?) beautiful view of the beach from a lookout point we stopped at:

You'll have to forgive me for the poor quality of the rest of these pictures. Our digital camera broke so I was stuck with two Kodak FunShare disposable cameras while in Hawaii, and the flash was struggling.

I bought baby Rocklin an adorable Hawaiian outfit while shopping for souvenirs. He'll match his Gramps (my Dad) because his Gramps likes these kinds of shirts!

My wonderful friends threw me a surprise mini-baby shower while we were in Hawaii. How thoughtful of them and how fun for me! They got me some super cute stuff.

We walked around this little area of Waikiki called The International Marketplace where you can buy souvenirs and such. Here are all of us girls taking a picture break:

Troy's parents treated everyone to a Hawaiian Luau the night before the wedding. It was so much fun! Here we all are (Kristen, Hillary, Angie, Heather and Jennifer) just after sunset:

Here I am in all my six months of pregnant glory on the beach:

Jennifer, Angie & Heather looked so cute in their matching Hawaiian dresses headed to the Luau

Congratulations, Angie & Troy! Thank you for letting me celebrate with you. I wish the two of you the best of luck in starting your new married life together. I love you guys!!

Bumbo Chair Recall!!

To all my mother and mother-to-be friends out there - I just read on msnbc.com that 1 million Bumbo chairs are being recalled due to reported head injuries on babies. Scary! I have a lot of friends who rave about the Bumbo chair, and I too have one on my baby registry. However, read this article and you may think twice: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21472055/?GT1=10450

Bye-bye cute blog...

So I kept hearing that when you pull up my blog page, it's just a big pink screen with no words. I think it's because the blog skin that I was using has since been yanked off the free market so I was forced to change the background to this boring greenish color. I don't know much about html, but I think it had something to do with that...not sure. Anyway, this new blog skin will just have to do for now until I have time to cruise the Internet for cute blog skins somewhere else.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to find cute blog skins for FREE?

The Biggest Loser

Are there any other "The Biggest Loser" tv show fans out there?? Last night I was so bummed - they voted my guy Phil off! I really liked him, he totally carried his team and then in the end it was a tie and another team ended up voting Phil off. Jerks.

Phil - you will be missed. :)

Yet another post about the little guy...

I'm trying not to make every post on here about pregnancy...but to be honest I don't have much else to talk about right now! My pregnancy has taken over my life and consumed my thoughts; especially lately as February is creeping up on me. I'm so excited for our little guy to get here, but at the same time I have so many overwhelming feelings, thoughts and emotions. I keep hearing from everyone around me that Adam and I better enjoy our time together now because before we know it life will be changed forever. This is something I understand that I don't fully comprehend now, seeing as we still sleep through the night, have a quiet house when we want it, don't have smashed up cheerios all over the kitchen, etc. etc. I think a tiny selfish part of me will miss having Adam 100% to myself once the baby is born, but the other part of me is so excited to grow our family. This is something both Adam and I have wanted all our lives!

I have so many questions that keep running through my head....will I be a good mother? Will I still be a good wife? Will my body every be back to "normal?" Will I still be able to juggle working some while raising a child and helping to keep our home in order? The list goes on and on and on. I've read multiple books on pregnancy thus far, and I guess you can only read and try to prepare so much and then the rest is left to the real life experiences and learning as you go. Lucky for me I have so many wonderful family and friends around me that are such amazing examples of mothers and women. I can only hope that I am half as good as a mother as my mom was to me or as my sister-in-law Sarah is to my two beautiful nieces. They make motherhood look so easy!

One other quick thing - last night I woke up at 4 AM with a horrible leg cramp and sat straight up and said OWWW really loud. I think I must have scared Adam, as he woke up and was like are you ok, what can I do... Poor guy, he probably thought the baby was trying to escape or something. I guess that's a miniature preview of what is yet to come. I hear that getting a charlie horse in your leg is quite common in pregnant women. I seem to get them a LOT! It is so annoying, and HURTS! Adam's sister Kristie said she too used to get them too and the best thing to do is get up and walk around. So early this morning at 4 AM I was up walking around our room whimpering with a stupid charlie horse. Thank heavens it subsided a bit and I was able to fall back asleep.

So I guess that's it for now on my thoughts on my little guy, as I like to call him. Actually, we have already picked out our baby's name. I'll close this post with his name, for those of you who don't already know:

Rocklin Jay Birkmeyer

Blog Skins

You may have noticed - I updated my semi-boring blog to this new super cute blog! I was checking out a friend of mine's blog and she had listed a link to this blog site for really cute and FREE blog skins: http://www.matiekay.blogspot.com/

Maybe having a cuter blog will make me motivated to post more often. :)

What do you all think - do you like this blog better than my old one?

Belly Pictures

Well...I think I've finally reached the point where you can tell I'm actually pregnant, and not just getting fatter!! I've been feeling pretty good lately, no real problems with the pregnancy to report...just the occasional headaches and body aches here and there. Overall I think that the little guy has been pretty nice to his momma. Here are some pictures of me, 5 months pregnant:

H-O-T

Living in Phoenix is perfect from about October - March, give or take a month or two on either end. The rest of the year, especially June - August, leaves little to be desired. I'm VERY happy to report the weather here is FINALLY starting to take a break from the 110 degree highs!! Here's to good weather!!!!

It's A BOY!!!!

Today Adam and I went in for an ultrasound and found out that we're having a BOY! I had a feeling all along that the baby was a boy. We are so excited and happy to report that so far the baby (and me) are very healthy and happy! Here is the "proof" - this ultrasound picture just shows his legs and his little man parts. :) The small arrow in the middle is pointing to the "proof":

New Ultrasound Pictures

Hello Friends and Family. Adam and I went to our Ultrasound appointment this morning and I wanted to share the pictures with all of you. The baby is looking good - growing a lot and was kicking and moving around like crazy during the ultrasound! It was so cute to see. We go back in on September 12 to find out the baby's gender! I can't wait!!! (Hopefully the baby cooperates that day!) Here are the pictures:

Random Thoughts

Hello! I've been feeling like I should post something new on the blog, but what to post? Our camera has seen better days, and posts with pictures are always more fun to read. Bear with me though, soon enough I'll have some new pictures up. I'll have to capture my belly as it gets bigger with our little guy! (No, we don't know if it's a boy yet, but I keep feeling like it is. We'll see if I'm right!). Speaking of the pregnancy, I'll be 14 weeks this week. I hear that is when the sickness phase of the pregnancy comes to an end. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that is true! I still go through periods of feeling sick, etc. etc. I'm sure Adam is tired of hearing me whine, but it's hard for me to explain how I feel. All this feeling sick doesn't take away from the excitement of expecting our first baby, however. Sometimes I think, wow...we're having a baby and I still can't believe it!

Moving on... I wanted to post a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my twin brothers Aaron and Adam who are both serving full-time missions right now. They are 21 as of yesterday! Aaron is currently in Peru and Adam is in Las Vegas. Adam was going to be coming home this month, but his mission president just extended his mission by another month! He must be doing one heck of a job out there for them to want to keep him longer. Aaron is going strong in Peru, coming home I believe in November. He's currently the AP (Assistant to the President) so he's getting to experience so many things! I can't wait to see his photo album of Peru once he returns home.

Speaking of birthdays, Adam (my husband, not my brother) his birthday is this week - Tuesday, August 7. Just so happens that Sarah, my brother Justin's wife celebrates her birthday that day too! We decided it must be an unwritten law that to marry into the Young family your birthday has to be on August 7th! :)

I think that's about all the random thoughts I wanted to share for now. Things in the Birkmeyer household are going well and hope all is well with all of you!

Ultrasound Pictures

Here are some fun ultrasound pictures taken last week. In these pictures, the baby is about 11 weeks. You can see the head, and little arms and legs forming! What do you think - a boy or girl?? Too bad we won't know until September sometime...

B-A-B-Y News!!!

Adam and I are having a baby!! We found out a couple months ago. I'm due at the beginning of February. Lucky for me, by the time I'm BIG and pregnant, I won't have to suffer in the hot Arizona heat! We are really excited about the news, although we weren't expecting the news quite so soon...but we are so happy and are really looking forward to our new little addition. Sometime in September we'll find out the sex of the baby. We've had two ultrasounds so far, and everything looks great. This past week we got to see the little arms, legs and head and for the first time it hit me - this is for real!!! I will try and scan the ultrasound pictures on this blog so that everyone can share in our excitement. I'm in the last week of my first trimester, so that is great news for me because I've had the typical early pregnancy symptoms of fatigue and a nauseated stomach. I hear those side effects go away after the first trimester, so I sure am looking forward to staying up later than 8 PM!! (I'm sure Adam is excited for that too!). I will be sure to blog a little more now that I have fun news to share along the way.

On a bit of a separate note, I'm so thankful for Adam and everything he does for me. He's going to be the greatest dad. He's very attentive and is a GREAT help around the house. Just today I was being lazy on the couch and he was busy doing all the dishes and cleaning the kitchen. How did I get so lucky to marry a man who loves to clean? He is such a hard worker and such a blessing in my life. Our baby will be so blessed to have Adam for a father.

Temple Sealing & Vacation

Adam and I just returned from a fun trip to GA! The trip began with our sealing in the Atlanta temple on June 16.

Our friends Joe & Erin Brown flew in from Utah to be with us.
Also, two of Adam's sisters flew in as well. Katie, Kristie & Luke flew in from Arizona.
All the family!

Here's Adam & I with my parents:

After the sealing, we spent a few days in Atlanta enjoying some time with my family, and then we took a short road trip to the Hilton Head, South Carolina. Here are some pictures from our Hilton Head visit:

Adam enjoyed some crab legs at this restaurant we ate at called Captain Seafood. Look at those big blue eyes... :)

Just a shot of us out and about. Check out how pretty and green that grass is!

We did some serious shopping on this trip. Adam was nice enough to carry all our bags back to the hotel.

Here we are in front of the lighthouse in Hilton Head.

Here are a few more misc. pictures from the trip:

Our last day in Atlanta...eating some BBQ with some of my family.

Beautiful Brynna!

Katie & Kristie
Baby Luke...he was SO good the entire time!

Me & Adam at the Marietta Square.

All in all we had a fantastic trip. What a blessing it was for us to get sealed in the temple! I so enjoyed spending time with my family and having Adam by my side. It was also a blessing having his sisters and best friend Joe and his wife fly in to be with us. Our trip to Hilton Head was nice and relaxing as well! Who doesn't love a fun vacation!

Happy One Year Anniversary To Us!!

Adam and I just celebrated our one year wedding anniversary!! Wow...one year has come and gone already! We had a great first year of marriage. At least I think so, Adam may have separate comments on that. JK... The funniest part is...WE FORGOT! Our one year anniversary was this past Sunday, June 10. Sunday came and we did all of our normal Sunday activities; went to church, watched a movie, hung out with my best friend Hillary who happened to be in town from Texas. The whole day we just went along as if it was any other day. That night, I was writing emails to my two missionary brothers and it hit me - June 10, we've been married for one year!! The ironic thing is that Adam and I BOTH forgot. ha!!

On a more serious note, I wanted to comment on how much I Love Adam, and how thankful I am to have him in my life. Our marriage has been so amazing and I wouldn't trade it for the world! I guess Heavenly Father knew what he was doing, saving me for marriage until I was 27. Adam is a wonderful husband and I know he will make a wonderful father. I am so excited to share many more adventures with him and our growing little family. I love you baby!!

Huntington Beach Trip

A couple of weekends ago, Adam and I took a weekend trip out to Southern California to visit two of my brothers that were out there on vacation. Daniel had just gotten home from his mission about a month before this trip, so this was the first time Adam got to meet his new brother-in-law!

Kevin, Adam & Daniel

Adam, me and Daniel went to dinner at Macaroni Grill; we met up with my cousin Angela and her husband Roy and their baby Emily.

The Baiamonte Family: Angela, Roy and Emily. We had fun visiting with them!

Saturday, we met up at Huntington Beach and rented beach cruiser bikes. We rode along the boardwalk and had so much fun! We stopped along the way and posed for a picture...

Here's one last picture of Adam and I at this funky little taco shop right in the middle of it all in Huntington Beach.
